Do All Safeway Locations Accept EBT in-store?
As discussed above, Safeway customers can make payments using their EBT card at all locations. However, keep in mind that you can only buy eligible food items that do not include hot food or cleaning and household supplies with the SNAP benefits. Find more information about eligible purchases with SNAP benefits here.
With TANF or EBT cash benefits, you have more freedom to buy necessities that fall under living expenses, including food, fuel, home improvement supplies, and personal hygiene products.
Using EBT Card At Safeway Locations
To use your SNAP or cash benefits at any Safeway location, you can use your EBT card at the checkout just as you would any debit or credit card. Swipe the card and enter the Pin number to authenticate the purchase. In case you need to buy products not covered by your EBT benefits, you can make another transaction and pay for it through one of the other accepted payment methods at Safeway. The supermarket chain accepts cash, major debit and credit cards, Safeway gift cards, personal checks, and Safeway Pay.
Even though Safeway’s website confirms in-store acceptance of EBT benefits, you can still cross-check its viability by viewing additional information through their Store Locator. This feature has contact information for every Safeway store, including whether or not EBT benefits are accepted in the store.
Can You Use The EBT Card Online At Safeway?
Many Safeway locations now accept EBT cards as a valid form of payment when shopping online. However, some locations accept EBT cards for pickup and delivery, while others only allow pickup. Safeway is working on adding more stores that take EBT payments online.
To check whether the Safeway supermarket near you accepts EBT for grocery delivery or pickup (or both), you can use the Store Locator.
Using the EBT Card At Safeway Online: Step-By-Step Guide
Using the EBT card for grocery delivery or pickup is a painless process. Follow these simple steps to shop from the comfort of your home.
Step #1: Create an Account
The first step is to start at the Safeway homepage and create an account. You will need to enter your name, contact information, and email address to make the account. After choosing a secure password for your account, you can have the information for easy subsequent sign-ins.
Step #2: Select A Safeway Store Location
The next step is to select the store of your choice. After you log in, the website automatically chooses a suitable Safeway location for you for pickup and delivery. However, you can change the location if the one automatically chosen does not work for you.
Click on “Your Store” on the homepage to select a different store. Here you can use the ZIP code or enter the city and state to find the store of your choice and even filter the search using the “Additional Services” tab to show only those locations that accept EBT benefits online. The selected store will be linked to your account.
Step #3: Shop For Your Groceries
Use the search bar on the homepage to find your required groceries quickly. Then, select the add button for any items you want in your basket. You can also avail the deals and coupons at the bottom of the homepage, so scroll down.
Step #4: Time To Checkout
Once done shopping, select the shopping cart icon on your screen to find the estimated tidal of your order. Once confirmed, you will move to various drop-down menus to confirm your order. Here you can select delivery or pickup for the online order. You will need to choose a date and time for both delivery and pick up. You will also be asked to add your delivery address or confirm the store location for pickup.
You can then add your SNAP EBT and an additional card to purchase non-eligible items. If you have cash benefits, almost all items in your cart can be paid through them, including any fees. Although, the eligibility may differ by state, so it’s best to check beforehand. Remember that the pickup service has no fees, but there are additional delivery charges.
You will receive confirmation of your order and reminders on the selected pickup or delivery date.
Checking Your EBT Card Balance With Safeway
The EBT payment entry section at the online Safeway checkout has the option to check the balance on your EBT card. Click on “EBT Balance Check” to ensure you do not go over budget.
Understanding The EBT Weight Debit
When you buy fruits and vegetables or any items charged by weight, a 10% weight debit is surcharged on your EBT card. However, if the actual price by weight is less than what was charged, the remaining amount is refunded to your EBT card.
The Bottom Line
Safeway accepts SNAP EBT and cash benefits at all of its locations in-store. However, only select stores accept EBT as a valid payment method online for pickup and delivery. To check whether the Safeway location near you accepts EBT online, you can use their Store Locator.
